Zulum commissions 5 health centres, begins Bama – Maiduguri highway

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday commissioned five healthcare centres in the densely populated Maiduguri metropolis, and flagged off the re-construction of the dilapidated Maiduguri-Bama highway.

Other projects commissioned include four primary healthcare centers along Baga road, Njimtilo, 777 housing estate, and Abujan Talakawa, all of which were started from scratch, and an overhauled infectious disease hospital along Kirikasamma road.

Zulum also commissioned a township road at Abuja-Sheraton community before laying foundation for the construction of another 50-bed health center in Wulari area of Maiduguri.

Governor Zulum’s administration aims to ensure that each of Borno’s 312 wards is provided with a primary healthcare centre in compliance with the standard of the World Health Organization (WHO).

More importantly, he noted the employment of hundreds of healthcare personnel already done by his administration to make healthcare centres functional. The Governor said all the numerous healthcare centres built in the central, southern and northern parts of the State, will be supported by competent staff.

On Maiduguri-Bama road, Zulum said the State was in talks with Alhaji Aliko Dangote to support in extending the road from Bama to Banki by the time the project reaches Bama from Maiduguri. He noted that connecting Banki will enhance trans-boarder trade and increase access to livelihood.

Zulum commended the quality of the commissioned projects executed by the State’s Ministry of Health and that of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement.


In another development, the Governor charged communities where developmental projects are sited  by the government to imbibe  maintenance culture .

The Governor dropped the charge on Tuesday while inspecting road construction at Jiddari  Polo community and London Ciki  community of Jere local government area of the state.

He said, in line with the ten-point transformation agenda of his administration, the state government has been embarking on developmental projects  across the state.

During his inspection tour of roads construction at Jiddari community which  were  at various stages of completion, Professor Babagana Umara expressed dismay over the non nonchalant attitude of the residents in the area , especially, on the issue of dumping of refuse in the newly constructed drainage.

The Governor stressed the need for the communities to take ownership of the government projects.

The entourage proceeded to London Ciki community to inspect similar projects where he also assured the community that street lights will be installed as soon as the roads and drainage construction is completed.

Governor Babagana Umara was also at karari-Shuwari village of Mafa local government  area where he also inspected ongoing construction of housing estate, urging the officials handling the projects to expedite work and comply with building  specifications.
