It is note worthy to recall the revolutionary announcement made by the minister of education Dr. Tunji Alausa on November 18 2024 which introduced new skills in the national secondary education system.
That announcement has remained an indelible turning point to the Nigeria educational system till date. Presently, many secondary school graduates do not have much to offer to the society due to lack of entrepreneurial skills training.
The intervention of Dr Tunji which now prioritizes practical learning aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, fostering a generation of graduates with special skills. Thankfully, that dream is becoming reality as schools have now embraced it.
There are actually 15 new skills acquisition programs that have been introduced into the curriculum of both primary and secondary schools.
These include:
- Agriculture and processing
- Basic digital literacy
- Plumbing
- Tiling and floor works
- POP installation
- Event Decoration and management
- Bakery and confectioneries
- Hairstyling
- Makeup
- Interior Design
- GSM Repairs
- Satellite/TV Antenna Installation
- CCTV, Intercom Installation, and Maintenance
- Solar Installation and Maintenance
- Garment Making
- Interior design.
This initiative is of no doubt a game changer for Nigeria’s education system in conformity with the global trend that promotes skills-based education.
In an exclusive interview with Dr Tunji, he emphatically Stated that education is the bedrock of national development and his administration’s main focus is to look into technical and vocational training in schools.
“We are investing in skills development because it is the key to empowering a nation”.
