The Bads of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Bads of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
By Catherine Ifeoma Samfelix
It’s no longer news or surprising that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is become so rampant and so rife in our world today. It is now so prevalent that even children are increasingly being exposed to its use. But the big issue to consider is the social and ethical impacts of AI and its technical limitations, among others.
There is no doubt that AI has is offering many advantages in our society today, but the disadvantages or harm associated with it cannot be underestimated too. These are considered as the bads of Artificial Intelligence. While embracing the service of AI completely, it is good that individuals consider the negative effects so as to balance judgement and choice.
The usage of service of AI can bring about displacement of job. This happens when AI replaces workers in an organization or industries, doing the job that normally it’s meant for professionals like legal assistance, medical assistance, to mention but a few.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) most of the time, lack true understanding of human intent or context; it only predicts patterns based on the data supplied. Its details is basically predictions on the supplied data. This goes to shows that AI has its own limitations.
Laziness and loss of human skills are other negative effects of wide usage of AI. Overreliance on AI might actually cause people to loose the skills like writing, critical thinking, problem-solving, or even basic communication. Everybody wants to ask AI for a solution for everything; everybody wants to tell AI to translate messages, no one has the strength and ability to proffer solutions through critical thinking. This is one of the bads of AI.
Furthermore, AI is totally dependent on data. AI systems need large high-quality datasets in order to perform accurately and efficiently. When no detailed data is supplied, it can eventually lead to unreliable and unrealistic results. This can be deceitful and sometimes lead to disaster.
It is important to know that AI can lead to misinformation and profound fakes. In recent times, AI has been used to generate fake news and sometimes fake identity or image, videos or voices leading to chaos in the society. This makes it hard for us to trust what we see, hear or read. It’s yet another bad of Artificial Intelligence.
Think about environmental pollution or cost. To embark on training large AI models consumes huge amount of electricity and resources for computing too. When the environment is constantly on electric variation, carbons are generated which is not healthy to environment and humans.
Another bad or negative effect of AI is the influence of few tech companies who controls it and the government too. It can lead to concentration of power and inequality because of the the bias programmed inside of it. This indeed eventually leads to monopolies and global inequality. AI accept or acts based on what is programmed inside it, so if influenced by government it can be unfair to certain persons leading to global inequality.
Conclusively, much as AI covers range of positive effects or advantages, there are clear negatives attached to it. As we make use of it daily and as programmers keep innovating on AI models, truth of its negativities must be kept in view, so that individuals can manage it wisely and not allow it over-ride human intelligence.
