Female students participation in sports: A pathway to empowerment
By Catherine Ifeoma Samfelix.
It is important to note that sports in its totality is so beneficial physically, mentally, socially and otherwise. Then the female students participation shouldn’t be taken for granted, it is beyond just a play. A girl student must be encouraged and supported in every kind of sport.
Female students participation in sports should be an important subject in education as well as gender equality. Sports is beyond just a source of recreation, it is also a major tool for leadership skills, discipline, teamwork and developing self confidence. It opens door for future opportunities too.
Previously, women were not supported as supposed to and this discourages female students from engaging in sports. However, today progress has been made in many schools and communities. Apparently, programs and policies such as, mentorship initiatives and scholarship schemes are being put in place to support girl students involvement in sports.
Physically, sports promote fitness and health, helping to prevent certain illnesses.ย The same as mentally, sports reduces stress and anxiety boosting self esteem and focus towards achieving goals. Then when it comes to socially, it teaches collaboration which is essential for both personal growth and academical growth. It enhances friendship too and creat a sense of belonging. All these and many more are important benefits of sports and girls must be recognized as they too need them all.
In many societies, girls are often told what they can or cannot do but sports help female students break stereotypes. Stepping into the field challenges those limiting beliefs. Every goal scored, race completed, or match won becomes proof of their strength, capability, and determination. This builds a sense of self-worth that extends beyond the sporting arena into academics, careers, and personal life.
In conclusion, there are many benefits girls stand to get from indulging in sports, girls and women who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and are at lower risk of getting some medical conditions like breast cancer. A sports person does have problems adapting in a society. It must not be seen as a male pursuit only females must be greatly encouraged.
