Research on 6G is advancing quickly as of early 2026, moving from theoretical ideas to practical research, prototyping, and testing, aiming for commercial rollout by 2030. Major factors driving this progress include the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) directly into the network framework (“AI-native”), the demand for improved energy efficiency, and the exploration of new frequency bands, especially within the 7–15 GHz range and sub-terahertz (THz) frequencies.

Trends and Accelerators
AI-Native Networks: In contrast to 5G, where AI was integrated into pre-existing frameworks, 6G is being architected with AI as a foundational element for real-time optimization, air interface creation, and network administration. Companies like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Samsung are focusing on developing AI-native solutions.

In early 6G field trials, speeds have reached up to 280 Gbps, which is almost 100 times faster than standard 5G performance.
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has begun efforts to define 6G specifications as part of Release 19, scheduled for 2024–2025, with initial technical specifications anticipated by 2028.
A major area of research is focused on “green” 6G, aiming to achieve higher data rates while minimizing energy consumption per bit.
