Mercy Corps Empowers 600,000 Nigerians
Targets Another 3000 Vulnerable IDPs in Borno

Mercy Corps Nigeria has supported over 600,000 Nigerians and also planned to empower another 3000 vulnerable IDPs on poultry farming in Borno state.
The Country Director of Mercy Corps Nigeria, Mr. Ndubisi Anyanwu disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists at the Dujima International Hotels conference hall Wulari Maiduguri on Thursday, October 22.
Mr. Anyanwu said that the organisation was working in over 40 countries and Nigeria is one of their splashy programme rendering humanitarian assistance since 2012 in many parts of the Nigeria focusing on the issues of conflict and helping people rebuild their life in the midst of the conflict
He was in Maiduguri to assist the team to kick start the Poultry Development for Resettlement PDR programme for over three thousands (3000) beneficiaries in various parts of Borno State.
He added that they were working closely with private sector farms to ensure that all the Mercy Corp Nigeria livelihood supports are sustainable for the communities of returnees, IDPs and the host communities.
The Direction also explained that Mercy Corps was working on a wide range of areas such as financial inclusion, Girl child education; promote dialogues in conflict affected areas, meditations, provide livelihood support to archive sustainable peace.
He further revealed that over six hundred thousand (600,000) participants have so far directly benefited from the various Mercy Corps. Programmes, adding that, “it is not only on support or the impact but the sustainability beyond the intervention is what most matters.”
Anyawu however commended the state government for providing an enabling environment for Mercy Corps to carry out its projects that are torching the lives of the people.
On his part, Raiz Khan, the team lead, Maiduguri field office said the workshop was basically organized to share experience with the stakeholders for the development of poultry farming for sustainable resettlement programmes in Northeast Nigeria.
He also confirmed that they have over 700 mother units which is intermediary and they were over 2,600 who are the direct beneficiaries, and also indirect beneficiaries of over two thousands including IDPs and the returnees in the resettling communities at all the local government areas across the state.
The Country Director said Mercy Corps was also working with the private sector to increase the poultry business, enlarge livelihood, and revitalize the market system for poultry in Borno state which has been affected by the conflict as it is known to everyone.
He also stressed that the workshop was meant for market system development as they have been in partnership with AMO Byng Poultry Farm which the Mercy Corp endeavors to connect with the small vulnerable farmers to continuously work and improve their livelihood in Borno state.
Rafz however noted that they were also working to ensure that the connection in the market and improve the supply chain of the poultry which is supported by Mercy Corp that will give them an opportunity to increase their livelihood through eggs and meat production.
He said that Amo Farm will provide all the necessary technical assistance such as doctors, technicians to train the mother unit on how to rear, vaccinate among other pivotal requirement so that vulnerable small farmers will be directly get births from the mother units and raise it from their house.
